How did you find yourself working in sexuality?
I began working in the sexuality field in 2004, as a peer health educator on Southern University's campus. While educating women on campus about STD's/STI's, I discovered that most of the women didn't have basic sexuality knowledge, and were most concerned with preventing pregnancy. That's when I went to work. I began doing my own research, and presenting everywhere. In 2013, I attended Widener University where I gained even more sexuality education.
Today, I work as a Sexologist in my private practice where I specialize in Sex and Relationship Therapy. I also provide sex and intimacy coaching and consulting across the world. I've been featured in several major platforms and sought after to speak on various Sex and Relationship topics.
What is the best part of the job?
I work with individuals, couples, LGBTQ+, people, people who practice BDSM/Kink, and so many other sexually diverse people. The best part of the job is that it doesn't feel like a job. I mostly enjoy the looks, and discussions of relief from clients I work with. Watching clients transform in ways they didn't believe they could is rewarding.
What is the most challenging part of the job?
The most challenging part of being a Sexologist is trying to provide informed sexuality information amongst so much misinformation. Especially on the internet. It seems like the more advanced the field of sexuality becomes, the internet finds a new way to block the work were doing. It's so disheartening.
What is your most important piece of advice that has the potential to revolutionize relationships?
My favorite philosophy and quote is, "create your own relationship." So many people have relationship anxiety because they are following society's or someone else's rules on what a relationship "should" be. Stop should-ing on yourselves! The best relationship is the one you create!
What do you do to decompress and take care of yourself given that you spend so much time helping and caring for others?
I practice what I preach! I try to set really good boundaries, and on the days I fall short, I start over. I make sure to spend time with my spouse, family, and friends and most importantly, I have daily routines that keep me feeling balanced.
What do you want people to know about your work as a sexologist?
I want people to know that being a Sexologist is a real profession! I learn and grow daily with the amazing people I work with. I just want to acknowledge that talking to a stranger about sexual issues is not easy for many people. I appreciate the people who trust me to see them naked. Not physically naked! Emotionally.
